What makes South African breweries unique

South Africa's craft brewing scene is unusual because it grew up alongside — not against — a powerful industrial beer culture. SAB (now part of AB InBev) has been brewing here since 1895, and Castle Lager is one of Africa's most recognised brands. Craft brewers had to earn their space by doing things SAB wouldn't: wild-yeast fermentation, fynbos-infused ales, sorghum-barley hybrids, and taproom experiences tied to local food and tourism.

The result is a scene that's deeply regional. Western Cape breweries lean into wine-country aesthetics and barrel-ageing. Gauteng is urban, industrial, and influenced by Joburg's German heritage. KwaZulu-Natal pairs beer with Durban curry culture. And Eastern Cape breweries operate in frontier territory, often off-grid and adventurous.
